A number input field lets customers type a precise numeric value — a length in centimeters, how many characters to engrave, or a custom quantity. If you searched for Shopify number input field or a quantity / measurement field, this guide explains why Shopify has no native custom number field, and how to add one with validation in minutes using Optionify, a free product options app.

How do I add a number input field to a Shopify product?

Shopify has no native custom number field beyond the cart quantity box. With Optionify, create an option set, add a Number input option, set the minimum and maximum values you allow, assign the set to your products, and enable the theme app embed. A validated number field then appears on the product page where customers can enter their value.

Why the cart quantity box isn't enough

Every Shopify product already has a quantity box, but it only controls how many units a customer buys. It can't capture a measurement, a character count, or any value that isn't "number of items." There's no built-in way to add a second, custom numeric field with its own label and validation.

That's the gap the Number input fills. It captures a specific value — separate from purchase quantity — and stores it as its own line item property. Because it isn't a variant, it creates no SKUs and doesn't touch the 3-options-per-product limit, which stayed fixed even after Shopify raised the variant cap to 2,048 in October 2025. See the variant limit explainer for why that ceiling still matters.

How to set up a number field in Optionify

  1. Click Create option set and name the set (e.g. "Custom length").
  2. Add an option and choose the Number input type.
  3. Enter the option label customers see, such as "Enter length in cm" or "Number of characters."
  4. Set a minimum and maximum value so entries stay within a realistic range.
  5. Add help text explaining the unit and any limits, e.g. "Enter a length between 10 and 200 cm."
  6. Assign the set with the right assignment method — All Products, Tagged Products, Collections, or Individual Products.
  7. Set the set to Active and save with Shopify's save bar.

As with all option types, the field only renders once the theme app embed is enabled in your theme editor.

Can I set a minimum and maximum?

Yes — and you should. Validation limits prevent invalid or unrealistic entries at the source. If you can only produce a banner up to 300 cm wide, set the maximum to 300 so a customer can't order 3,000. If a monogram allows at most 10 characters, cap it there. Clear help text plus min/max validation keeps orders clean and avoids costly production mistakes.

Number input vs. range slider vs. dimension

Optionify has three numeric option types. Pick by how the customer should enter the value and whether price scales with it:

  • Number input — the customer types an exact value. Best when precision matters and the range is wide, like a measurement in millimeters.
  • Range slider — the customer drags a slider between a min and max you set, with a step you define. Best for approximate choices where a visual control feels natural.
  • Dimension — width × height inputs with area-based pricing: the price is a unit price multiplied by the area. Best for made-to-measure goods like fabric, wallpaper, or signage where cost scales with size.

Can a number field affect the price?

A number input can be paired with an add-on price on the option — a fixed amount or a percentage of the product price — which is carried to checkout through a hidden companion product and works with Buy it Now and Shop Pay. If you need the price to scale with the number entered (for example, per square meter), use the Dimension type instead, which multiplies a unit price by width × height. See pricing variants for how add-on charges reach the order.

Real use cases for number input fields

Measurements. A custom blinds shop asks for "Width (cm)" and "Drop (cm)" with min/max limits matched to what they can manufacture.

Custom quantities. A print shop lets customers enter an exact sheet count — "Number of copies (50–5,000)" — instead of forcing them into fixed pack sizes.

Monogram character count. An embroidery service caps a "Number of characters" field at the maximum the design allows, preventing over-long monograms.

Age, year, or numeric codes. A personalized gift store captures a birth year or jersey number as a validated numeric field.

Because the entered value is saved as a line item property, your production team reads the exact number straight from the order — no follow-up messages, no guesswork.

Show a number field only when relevant

Keep product pages tidy by revealing a number field only after a related choice. With conditional logic on Optionify's visual flow canvas, you can show "Number of characters" only when the customer selects "Add engraving," so the field never clutters the page when it doesn't apply.

FAQ

How do I add a number input field to a Shopify product? Shopify has no native custom number field beyond the cart quantity box. With Optionify, create an option set, add a Number input option, set min and max limits, assign it, and enable the theme app embed.

Can I set a minimum and maximum on a number field? Yes. Set a minimum and maximum so customers can only enter values in the range you allow — useful for measurements, monogram counts, or custom quantities.

What is the difference between a number field and the cart quantity box? The quantity box multiplies the whole product. A Number input captures a specific value, like a length or a character count, stored as its own line item property.

Can a number field affect the price? A number value can be paired with an add-on price. For price that scales with size, use the Dimension option type, which multiplies a unit price by width times height.

Does the number entered show in the order? Yes. The value is saved as a line item property on the order, visible to fulfillment and production.
