Checkbox options let a customer tick multiple add-ons on the same product — extra batteries, gift wrap, a warranty, an extra topping. If you searched for Shopify checkbox options or product add-on checkboxes, this guide shows why native variants can't do multi-select, and how to build priced, multi-select add-ons in a few minutes with Optionify, a free product options app.

How do I add product add-on checkboxes in Shopify?

Shopify's built-in variants only let a customer pick one value per option, so they can't power true multi-select add-ons. With Optionify, create an option set, add a Checkbox option, list each add-on as a value with its own price, assign the set to your products, and enable the theme app embed. Customers can then tick as many extras as they want.

Why variants can't handle multi-select add-ons

A Shopify variant represents one fixed combination — one size, one color. If you tried to offer five independent add-ons as variants, you'd need a separate SKU for every possible combination, and you'd still hit the 3-options-per-product limit that remained unchanged even after Shopify raised the variant cap to 2,048 in October 2025.

Checkboxes solve a different problem: independent, stackable choices. A customer should be able to select "gift wrap" AND "warranty" AND "engraving" together. Optionify checkboxes live outside the variant system, so they don't create SKUs and don't count against the variant limit. You can add as many add-on checkboxes to a product as you like.

Checkbox vs. radio buttons: which to use

The distinction is simple but easy to get wrong:

  • Checkbox — customers select any number of choices, including none or all. Use it for add-ons and extras that stack: accessories, toppings, upgrade services.
  • Radio buttons — customers select exactly one mutually exclusive choice. Use it for things like a single shipping speed or a single finish.

If the answer to "can they pick more than one?" is yes, you want a checkbox.

How to set up checkbox add-ons in Optionify

  1. Click Create option set and name the set (e.g. "Camera add-ons").
  2. Add an option and choose the Checkbox type.
  3. Enter the option label, such as "Add extras" or "Choose your toppings."
  4. Add each add-on as a value — "Extra battery," "Carrying case," "Screen protector."
  5. Give each value an add-on price (details below).
  6. Decide whether the option is required, and set a minimum expectation in the help text if needed.
  7. Assign the set with the right assignment method — All Products, Tagged Products, Collections, or Individual Products.
  8. Set the set to Active and save with Shopify's save bar.

Can each checkbox have its own price?

Yes — and each can price differently. Every checkbox value carries an add-on price in one of two modes:

  • Fixed — a set amount, e.g. "Extra battery (+$10.00)."
  • Percent — a percentage of the product price, e.g. "Extended warranty (+15%)."

When a customer ticks several boxes, the add-on charges add together and carry to checkout through a hidden companion product — so they work with Buy it Now and Shop Pay too. See pricing variants for how the totals reach the order.

Setting minimum and maximum selections

For "choose any 3" style bundles, make the checkbox option required so the customer can't skip it, and spell out the rule in the help text, for example "Pick up to 3 free toppings; each additional is +$1." You can go further with conditional logic on the visual flow canvas — revealing a second checkbox group only after a first choice is made — to guide larger add-on menus without overwhelming the page.

Real use cases for checkbox add-ons

Accessories and bundles. An electronics store offers "Extra battery (+$10)," "Carrying case (+$15)," and "Screen protector (+$8)" as ticks on the product page — no bundle SKUs required.

Food toppings and extras. A bakery lets customers add "Sprinkles (free)," "Extra frosting (+$2)," and "Candles (+$1)" to a custom cake.

Add-on services. A furniture retailer offers "Assembly (+$40)," "Old-item removal (+$25)," and "Extended warranty (+12%)" that customers combine freely.

Feature preferences. A software or subscription product surfaces optional modules as checkboxes, each with its own recurring or one-time add-on price.

Because every ticked box becomes a line item property on the order, your fulfillment team sees the exact extras a customer chose — no guesswork, no separate spreadsheet.

FAQ

How do I add product add-on checkboxes in Shopify? Shopify variants can't do multi-select. With Optionify, create an option set, add a Checkbox option, list each add-on as a value with its price, assign it to your products, and enable the theme app embed.

Can each checkbox have its own price? Yes. Every checkbox value can carry a fixed amount or a percentage of the product price. Selected checkboxes add their charges together and carry to checkout, including Buy it Now and Shop Pay.

Can I require a minimum or maximum number of checkboxes? Yes. Make the option required so customers pick at least one, state limits in the help text, and use conditional logic to guide larger add-on menus.

Do checkbox add-ons create Shopify variants? No. Checkboxes aren't variants, so they never create SKUs or count against Shopify's 3-options-per-product limit.

Where do checkbox selections appear after checkout? Each ticked checkbox is saved as a line item property on the order, along with its add-on price, visible in the order details.
